flyin miata makes a CA legal super charger kit. Also they are known as the fattest most heavy and possibly most comfortable of all the pre ND miatas. you could get a power hardtop for extra fatness.
Everything I have read and watched seems to point out that they are heavier and have more features and comfort things but are still rather miata like.

Have driven NA through NC Miatas - the NC is the heaviest and also feels the smallest. That said, the top is a vast improvement over the earlier cars, and it has a lot of more modern interior features plus ABS, ESC and many airbags. By all accounts they are decent, they don’t seem especially prone to rust, but that would be my first concern given that it is a Mazda. Cosmetic stuff on any Miata is a pain, buy the nicest kept one you can find. Also test drive a couple - a bad one is still pretty good, so it’s easy to get fooled.

Just to add: basic trims don’t have ESC. Guess how I found that out.

My mom has one that I’ve borrowed it a few times. I can’t compare it to the others, but it’s definitely fun to drive and pretty comfortable.
I have noticed that the clear coat is really poor and develops lots of issues

NCs are more “livable” than NAs or NBs. Every NC owner I’ve spoken to has been very happy with their purchase.
There are some issues that you may want to research that are exclusive to the “NC1" generation. Weak rods on the 2006/2007 models or something, but it only became a problem in a small number of vehicles. Overall reliability of these cars is very good.

I’d strongly recommend a 2009 or later car if at all possible. For that model year and later, Mazda strengthened up the engine, increased the rev limiter, made the sport suspension actually sporty, and changed the 6 speed manual transmission gear ratios from way too short to something more reasonable (at least in the US). Also, if your friend wants the sport suspension (which also comes with a LSD), look for yellow shocks.
If for some reason that isn’t viable, at least shoot for a mid-late 2007 or later production date vehicle. Some early NCs suffered from rod-related issues which got remedied part-way through the 2007 model run. Apart from that, just give it the usual used car inspection routine, because there really isn’t much to worry about apart from a potentially lazy or stuck thermostat.
Also in case you didn’t notice it in the ad, it looks like that particular NC doesn’t have cruise control (which was optional on the lowest 1-2 trims IIRC). I know you can add it yourself to US-spec cars with relative ease (as the wiring is already there), but I’m not sure about the European cars.
They may be the heaviest of the Miata generations, but it’s not as bad as everyone else makes it out to be. The extra power and stiffer chassis make up for it IMO and it’s a touch more comfortable and spacious. Add some better suspension and it’ll dance around just fine .
